Hallo Zusammen!

Heute gibt es nach langer Zeit endlich mal wieder ein Meet the Flickrs Interview! Und über dieses Interview freue ich mich besonders. Er ist einer der Kontakte der ersten Stunde bei Flickr – und immer ein Quell an Inspration gewesen…und er ist es immer noch Aaron Nace besticht durch seine surrealistischen Composings und atemberaubende Ideen. Er formt aus Bildern wirklich seine ganz eigne, faszinierende Welt. Ein paar Auszüge gibt es heute hier im Blog und natürlich das Interview gleich mit dazu – viel Spaß!

Give us a Quick description of yourself and where you come from and what you do outside the flickr life?

Aaron: Hi! My name is Aaron Nace and I’m a photographer and digital artist.  I was born in Kauai, Hawaii and moved to North Carolina when I was a teenager.  Other than posting my images on Flickr, I teach an online Photoshop class which allows anyone in the world to learn how to create images like mine.  When Avery (my amazing girlfriend!) and I aren’t conducting photo shoots, we like to cook, travel, read, and just be together.

How did you meet Flickr the first time?

Aaron: I used Flickr for the first time to post images of mine when I was traveling in South America.  It was a way to share photos of what I was doing with my family and friends.

How do you got into photography?

Aaron: I’ve always been interested in making images.  I went to school for design where I realized I wasn’t the best at drawing.  I needed another medium.  When I graduated, I had a good friend who was a photographer, and he made me realize that I could make my own art using a camera.  After attending university, I attended dental school and was working on my 365 project.  I was more interested in my photography project than dental school.  I realized I could make a greater impact on the world through photography.

What do you like Most on photography/what inspires you most? And where do you get your inspiration from?

Aaron: What I love most about photography is that it allows you to create whatever your mind can imagine.  My girlfriend, Avery Carlton has helped me realize who I want to be.  She inspires me to be a better person and photographer. Our relationship has made me want to expand into new territories and complete the impossible.  She pushes me to be better and has led me out of a stagnant series.  We have made plans to live this life together and we are constantly working to become better.  We work as a team.  She supports me, and I support her.  There is no “I” in “A Team”.  For our images, we get inspiration from anywhere…we can just look at something and our minds start to wander from there!

Did Flickr help you to get you where you are right now? (i mean doing Photoshop Teaching on the web and doing professional Photoshoots)

Aaron: Flickr definitely had its role in my success.  I cannot thank my fans enough for supporting from the beginning until now.  Their support and comments are what kept me going.

Unfortunately, Flickr does not allow me to post links to my class website…so getting the word out about my class on Flickr has been somewhat of a struggle.  Regardless, the class is still a success.  I would love to advertise on Flickr because those are the people I want to teach the most.  It would make me feel like I could give something back to them.

Finding Meaning

You’re creating really impressive and sometimes sureal shots and artworks. Have you got a vision of the final Version already in your mind before shooting or does the final version gets to your mind while postprocessing?

Aaron: Avery and I generate a concept and then sketch it out.  We have a clear vision of what the image will look like from our sketch.  We figure out camera angle, posing for models, and even the light setup.  Sometimes we even do a mock shoot using Avery as the model just to be sure our image will be a success.  We have all of this figured out before anyone shows up for the shoot.

Did you learn all about retouching by yourself?

Aaron: I started using PS at 15 years old using other peoples images to create my own art… During design school, I used PS for designing products and whatnot.  I became more familiar with the program.  I am self-taught.  I have always tried to make the impossible happen through this program.

Do you shoot JPG or Raw? And why?

Aaron: I ALWAYS shoot raw because it maintains more information about the image such as color and light information.

Aaron: We use our blog and Facebook to promote our photos as well.  These social medias are great because they allow us to interact with other photographers, and also answer any questions.  We post our latest work with behind the scenes photos and video.  We are constantly posting updates on everything we do through these medias.

Is there anything you like to announce here in Germany – maybe do some advertising for your Photoshop Classes?

Aaron: I teach a live Photoshop class online in which we edit images that I have in my portfolio.  Students can see my screen and hear my voice.  They are able to ask questions and receive an answer instantly.  There is a beginner and advanced class so we cover simple and complex techniques.  I teach a beginner and advanced class every other month and anyone can join.  I post review videos after each class in case someone cannot make it to class.  You can find more information at www.learnphotoshoplive.com.

Also, Avery and I are conducting photography with Photoshop seminars! The seminar would be at least 3 days long and we would cover everything from concept planning, conducting a real photo shoot, and then post processing in Photoshop.  We would LOVE to visit Germany again if there is an interest.  We want to keep the class size around 15-20 people.  Please contact us if this is of interest to you!

Am heutigen Sonntag, das letzte Flickr Meetup ist schon etwas her, möchte ich gerne ng.kelven vorstellen. Er kommt aus Vancouver, Canada und wurde von meinem letzten Bloggast _Arshia_ vorgeschlagen. Hier nun ein kleiner Einblick in seine Fotos und seinen Flickr-Account – viel Spaß!

Q: Give us a Quick description of yourself and where you come from and what you do outside the flickr life?
A: I live in the great white north in Vancouver, Canada. As for what I do, I am a chartered accountant. Outside of work though, photography, hockey, and eating are three of my greatest passions!

Q: How did you meet Flickr the first time?
A: I think it was through a link to a picture that was hosted here…

Q: At what age you got started with photography? And why?
A: I started using a digital slr about 1.5 years ago. My friend had a Canon XS and the picture he took with his 50mm f1.8 just stunned me. I didn’t think that the picture quality and depth of field could come out so different compared to a point and shoot. Since then, I got my own and haven’t looked back!

Q: What are the main reasons for your interest in photography?
A: I have always been intrigued with design and I like things that look good aesthetically. That interest translated into an interest in web design, photography, and design products (unfortunately making me a bit of a stickler for brand names).

Q: What Equipment you are using?
A: Good thing you weren’t asking which gear I have used… I currently have a Canon 5D Mark II (far beyond my skill level) for a body and my lenses consist of:
Canon 35mm F1.4 L
Canon 135mm F2.0 L
Carls Zeiss 21mm F2.8 ZE Distagon

Q: Whats your favorite Lens?
A: Hard to say, I love all three. My 35mm is my most used though because of its versatility and focal length. I am a depth of field guy though… so the F1.4 helps in that regard.

Q: Can you name your favourite photographer? Maybe a famous one?
A: I am not in tune with famous photographers around the world, so my favorite photographers are those contacts that I have on flickr. There are some amazingly talented photographers here (many of which are professional already).

Q: whats your favourite contact on flickr? And why?
A: That is a tough question because I have a few that I follow very closely. If I had to name a few that I follow on a day to day basis and are always a source of inspiration I would say… Callissa, Pavicha, _Arshia_, and isayx3.

Q: Have you got any real-life friends using flickr?
A: Not anyone that I knew before flickr. Since using flickr though, there are some contacts that I would consider a friend and wouldn’t hesitate to hang out with on a photowalk or grabbing a cup of coffee.

An diesem Sonntag bekommen wir Besuch von _Arshia_ – sie wurde von California CPA nominiert und ich freue mich, dass Sie dem Interview sofort zugestimmt hat! Ich habe beschlossen die Interviews (außer es gäbe schwere Einwände) in Englisch zu lassen und nicht zu übersetzen. Ich denke die meisten werden etwas Englisch können und kommen damit klar. Sollte wirklich jemand überhaupt kein Wort verstehen bitte ich um Info und es wird natürlich übersetzt – Ehrensache!

Nun aber zu Arshia und ihren Fotos auf Flickr:

Q: Give us a Quick description of yourself and where you come from and what you do outside the flickr life?
A: Well, I was born and raised in the crazy city of Tehran, in Iran. I was a teenager when I moved to Canada almost 10 years ago. hmmm, today I’m a structural engineer, so when I’m not flickr and I’m still at my computer, I’m probably designing a bridge or doing capacity checks on marine structures! Oh and I must say this, I love ice-cream, and chocolate, and I would die for chocolate ice-cream

Q: How did you meet Flickr the first time?
A: I met flickr almost three years ago, and I made my account to have a decent back up of my favorite photos.

Q: At what age you got started with photography? And why?
A: Hmmm, I think I was in elementary school that I fell in love with my sister’s Yashica FX3-2000, but back then developing photos were kind of expensive. When I was about 15 or so I figured I had a passion for painting and drawing so I started taking photos of what I liked to have a model and draw them afterward. And then the digital photography was another reason, I started taking more and more photos and I never had the time to draw them all, so I figured I liked photography more and painting was just an excuse for me to take shots of what I liked.

Q: what do you like Most on photography/what inspires you most?
A: Photography has made me pay more attention to my surroundings, it makes me look more carefully and enjoy the details. I am inspired with the simplest things of a daily life, and I usually try to look at something that a lot of other people pass by easily without even noticing, this could be a coffee cup, or a wet newspaper at a corner of a library or coffeeshop.

Q: Whats your favourite thing to shoot? Landscapes, People, Things,…?
A: I must say pretty much everything. May be not landscapes so much; but definitely people and their expression. And also random tiny little details of daily life, this could be a Monday morning dark coffee stained cup, or a martini glass at a bar on Friday night.

Q: What Equipment you are using?
A: In my kit you can find:

Q: Your shots got a very unique style – where do you think this style comes from?
A: Well, thank you. I think most of my shots are taken during the day light, and they have a bright pink tone, I think my style comes from from my femininity. Most girls like pink, and bright colours, so I usually process my photos to somehow have a pink or yellow tone. It just makes me happy to have bright tones in my photos.

Q: Whats your favorite Lens?
A: Oh I’m in love with my Nikkor 50mm 1.4/f.

Q: Can you name your favourite photographer? Maybe a famous one?
A: Robert Frank, and I love his book “the Americans”.

Q: whats your favourite contact on flickr? And why?
A: Hmm, this is not an easy one, there are so many of them, they inspire me everyday, and they always make me want to take more shots. If I want to narrow them down, I would say:
California CPA, Ziemek T, ..Peter, camden olive, ~ulyana~, Mike Trent, ng.kelven…

Q: Have you got any real-life friends using flickr?
A: Yes Ulyana, and Ziemek.

Nach einiger Übersetzungsarbeit kommt hier nun das erste Meet the Flickrs Interview mit California CPA. Ich habe ihn schon länger als Kontakt bei Flickr und wir haben uns auch schon das ein oder andere Mal geschrieben – ich finde seinen Flickr-Stream wirklich grandios – gerade auch weil jedes Foto irgendwie anders und besonders ist. Sei es der Stimmung wegen oder einfach nur wegen des besonderen Motivs und Blickwinkels.

Q: Kannst du uns kurz sagen wo du her kommst und was du beruflich machst? Und natütlich was dich außerhalb von Flickr bewegt!
A: Wie mein Flickr Nickname schon sagt bin ich ein “CPA”, niedergelassen in Kalifornien. “CPA” steht für Certified Public Accountant. Hauptsächlich geht es dabei um Steuern und ich helfe Menschen bei Ihrer Buchhaltung. Ursprünglich bin ich zur Hälfte Spanier und zur Hälfte Nordamerikaner. Die meiste Zeit meiner Kindheit habe ich in Spanien verbracht aber die Schulbank dann in den USA gedrückt…jetzt lebe ich seit Dezember 2005 in Kalifornien. Ich bin verheiratet mit einem großartigen spanischen Köchin und habe 3 Kinder – alles Jungs! Zwei von Ihnen sind in Spanien geboren, einer in den Niederlanden.

Q: Warum hast du das erste Mal Bilder bei Flickr hochgeladen?
A: Ich habe einen Flickr Account erstellt damit meine Mutter in Spanien sehen kann wie es uns in Kalifornien geht. Hauptsächlich mit Bildern von den Kindern und dem kalifornischen “Umland”.

Q: Wie bist du zur Fotografie gekommen?
A: Naja ich stehe total auf technischen Schnickschnack und so eine Kamera ist der ultimative Schnickschnack! So viele Einstellungen die man ändern kann! hahahahha… Und nun habe ich 3 Kompaktkameras und 2 DSLRs Im Grunde war es aber meine Schwester der meine Fotos so gut gefielen – ich dachte erst sie macht Spaß, aber Sie schien sie wirklich zu mögen und so habe ich mich mehr mit der Fotografie beschäftigt um sie damit überraschen!

Q: Was magst du an der Fotografie am liebsten, was inspiriert dich am meisten?
A: Ich mag es wenn ein Foto Neugier weckt. Normalerweise schaust du dir ein Foto für einen Sekundenbruchteil an, steckst es in irgendeine Schublade und bist dann schon bereit das nächste anzuschauen. Daher liebe ich es wenn du zweimal oder sogar dreimal hinschauen musst – das kann dann alles sein – eine Atemberaubende Landschaftsaufnahme oder auch nur ein einfacher Schatten.

Q: Hast du schon einmal lustige oder besondere Situationen erlebt während des fotografierens?
A: Ja da gibt es in der Tat ein paar…ich bat meinen 3 jährigen Sohn einmal direkt auf die Kamera zu zu rennen um den schnellen Fokus meiner Kamera zu testen. Das lustige daran war dass er in letzter Sekunde stoplerte und mich und meine Kamera mit voller Wucht traf – aber dafür hatte ich am Ende ein Foto von ihm mit geschlossenen Augen kurz vor dem Aufprall Außerdem ist es immer wieder lustig mit anderen Flickr Mitgliedern in L.A. auf Fototour zu gehen…da schauen einen die Leute an als wäre man verrückt

Q: Welche Ausrüstung benutzt du normalerweise?
A: Ich habe eine Canon 5D mk2 mit einem 20mm f1.8 (sigma), 50mm f1.4, 100mm f2.0, 24-70mm f2.8, 15-30mm (sigma), 70-200mm f4. Außerdem noch eine Panasonic GF1 mit einem 20mm f1.7, 14-140mm, 9-18mm, eine Canon s90 und 2 kleine Panasonic Kompaktkameras.

Q: Gibt es Fotos für die du ein Stativ benutzt?
A: Ich benutze ganz selten ein Stativ. Ich fotografiere sehr intuitiv und selbst HDR-Bilder schieße ich ohne Stativ. Ich habe sogar schon mal eine HDR-Landschaftsaufnahme freihändig aus einem fahrenden Auto augenommen. Die einzigen Male wo ich ein Stativ benutzt habe war für Gruppenaufnahmen oder Langezitbelichtungen eines Flusses oder des Meers.

Q: Hast du ein Lieblingsobjektiv?
A: Da gibt es viele…:) I mag die Qualität der Canon L Objektive. Für Portraits ist mein Favorit das 100mm f2.0 udn für andere Aufnahmen benutze ich meist ein Sigma 20mm f1.8. Es ist nicht wirklich super scharf aber dafür ist die Schärfentiefe und der Weitwinkel wirklich nett!

Q: Fotografierst du JPG oder RAW? Und warum?
A: I fotografiere immer im RAW-Format außer es soll ein HDR-Bild werden. RAW bietet einfach mehr Details bei der anschließenden Bearbeitung – und ich bearbeite viel im Nachhinein.

Q: Wer sind deine Favortien unter deinen Flickr Kontakten?
A: Naja das bist dann wohl du! Natürlich!!! hahahah…nein im Ernst es ist wirklich schwer genau einen zu benennen – es gibt soviele großartige Fotografen auf Flickr und natürlich auch ein paar lustige Leute. Meine Kandidaten wären aber: Extra Medium; Isayx3, Bigboydrums, Andy Kennelly, CarLee, _ARSHIA_, 57mondays…und ich glaube ich vergesse so viele!

Q: Gibt es noch andere Plattformen auf denen du Fotos veröffentlichst?
A: Nein. Ich habe nur die Zeit für Flickr…und das ist auch schon seeehr zeitraubend!

Meet the Flickrs!

Und zwar geht es um folgendes:
Es wird im 1-2 Wochen Rhythmus ein Interview mit einem Flickr Mitlied hier auf dem Blog geben. Den ersten Interviewpartner habe ich schon ausgewählt und die Fragen gingen auch schon per Flickr-Nachricht raus. Vom ausgewählten Kontakt wird hier dann das schönste Foto gebloggt und natürlich die Fragen…und seine Antworten darauf. Der Interviewte darf dann den nächsten Interviewpartner aussuchen, mitsamt dem seiner Meinung nach schönsten Foto auf dessen Stream.

Alle “Favoriten” werden in einer Galerie auf Flickr gesammelt – sobald wir die 18 Bilder die in eine Flickr Galerie passen zusammen haben, endet die Aktion.

Sinn und Zweck:
Ich denke so bekommt man immer mal wieder interessante Fotostreams und gute Fotos aus aller Welt zu Gesicht!

Sprachbarriere:
Da ich viele Kontakte habe die hauptsächlich Englisch sprechen wird es die Interviews in Englisch und in Deutsch geben (ich hoff’ ich halt das durch )
